rainbow's end

rainbows do end
though scientists say
no
impossible
against the laws of nature

i know
i have seen
i have been there

driving through canada
past cloud-peaked mountains
on a winding highway
the burst of sky-color following us,
painting the clouds,
its palette the universe itself,

we rolled along,
unthinking,

until around the bend we saw it:
the end,
the spectrum stripes falling to the ground right before our eyes
in the road just ahead.

in future days
when dreams have blended with
the road dust
and tremors deep within
shake my foundation
under hazy gray
skies

i will long to recapture the moment
of passing
when the lazy arcs of color
dazzling
rich
majestic
stayed calmly and steadily before us
until we drove right through them
and watched as,
perhaps bewildered,
they melted,
diffused,
and disappeared into
the canadian sky.
