The Metapoem Assignment!

English 3 Honors

Young Poets

by Nicanor Parra (translated by Miller Williams)

Write as you will
In whatever style you like
Too much blood has run under the bridge
To go on believing
That only one road is right.

In poetry everything is permitted.

With only this condition of course:
You have to improve the blank page.

Your Assignment:

Create your own metapoem.  Perhaps you can come up with a wonderful extended metaphor about poetry.  Perhaps you write to make a comment on writing.  Perhaps you will write about your struggle to find the perfect word or the joy of completion or the way that the poem sometimes seems to write itself.  Perhaps you will write about something else entirely.  But the assignment requires that you write a poem about poetry, subject to the condition listed in Nicanor Parra’s poem above.

When you have written it, give it a title.  Then go to the bulletin board and post it there in the forum called “Metapoems.”  After the poem, in the same post, include a paragraph or two exploring the concept, symbol,, metaphor or whatever you were trying to get across.  Use as your subject line the title of your poem and the author, as in: “My Metapoem” by Joe LaPoet.

This post is due by Monday’s class.
