Portrait
of the Artist
Final
Project
Issues:
·
How does one explain Stephen’s artistic philosophy?
·
How does Stephen’s life story lead him to this philosophy?
·
Why does Stephen find it necessary to exile himself from family, friends,
religion and country in order to fulfill his role as the artist?
·
How does his interplay with his college friends solidify his
understanding of who he is?
Challenge:
·
How to explore, in a creative project, Stephen’s artistic
philosophies in a way that clearly defines not only those philosophies
themselves but also the answers to the other questions listed above?
Possibilities:
·
Using Chapter Five as a guide, create a film or other video
presentation that illustrates Stephen’s ultimate character growth, philosophy,
and destiny.
o
Be sure to show connections to earlier sections of the book as
they illuminate the issues you discover in this project.

Using Chapter Five as a guide, prepare a class presentation using
visual aids and textual support that illustrates Stephen’s ultimate character
growth, philosophy, and destiny.

Other suggestions approved by me.
Parameters:
·
Projects may be done by 1-3 students.
o
Grades will be assessed in part based on number of
contributors. If there are three
contributors, much more will be expected than if there are only two.
o
It is the group’s responsibility to assure that everyone’s
contributions are of equal weight.
·
Specific textual references are always critical in any project based on literature. The fact that it is creative does not
preclude that.
·
If it is live, practice it.
If it is to be brought in on disc, etc., be sure that it is of the best
quality you can manage…and check that it actually functions on school machines.
PROJECTS
