Assignment: Outline
an effective essay
If we were worried only about organization, writing great
essays could easily be taught. Great
essays, of course, are much more than just well-organized, but they are at least well-organized. Organization is the structure that holds them
together and makes them work, much as the structures within walls ultimately
support the artworks hanging in the room.
Tonight:
Create a clear and organized outline for an imaginary essay
on “Girl.” Use the following format:
Introduction:
- CI: any
variation on “The mother and the daughter inhabit two different
worlds.”
- Mapping
statement 1
- Mapping
statement 2
- Mapping
statement 3
-
Body:
- A
- Statement
reflecting Map 1
- Explanation
or clarification of map
- Quote
for support
- B
- Statement
reflecting Map 1
- Explanation
or clarification of map
- Quote
for support
- C
- Statement
reflecting Map 1
- Explanation
or clarification of map
- Quote
for support
-
Conclusion:
- Some
echo and extention of the CI
- Echo
with something like: “Though this mother cares for her daughter’s
welfare, there is little hope that the daughter will ever follow in her
footsteps.” Don’t merely repeat the
CI in the same words. Use what you’ve
argued!
- Finish
with a concluding idea that extends the notion of the CI, possibly into a
final thought, possibly into something that is relevant to today’s world,
etc.
Always remember the mathematical organization: CI = A + B + C; everything
in the paper should support the CI.
